The Brief

INITION was approached by award-winning advertising agency Adore Creative to develop a unique experience for Russian Copper Company (RCC) which enabled participants to follow a step-by-step raw copper ore extraction exercise in an immersive way.

The project included the entire mining process, beginning from the ground being blown up and the copper ore extracted, through to it being crushed, ground, processed, refined and turned into a component ready for use in electronic devices.

The experience provided insight into consumer electronics manufacturing which are often built using elements derived from natural compounds found in the earth.

Our Solution

Working with Adore Creative, INITION developed an immersive three minute, first-person virtual reality experience of the copper extraction, treatment and manufacturing process.

To achieve this, the visuals were accompanied by audio sound effects supplied by RCC from on-site an actual copper mine which we seamlessly integrated to provide the full effect of the extraction process.

We also added bespoke design elements to the head-mounted display to add to the authenticity and atmosphere; the RCC logo was embossed on the front surface, whilst the body of the display was coated in a copper-style treatment for aesthetic effect. The experience relied on optics of the same type used in the immensely popular Oculus Rift, whilst the processing and display were handled by the Amazon HDx tablet which enabled a 1920 x 1080 screen resolution and quad core processor.

Results

The experience was unveiled at Innoprom 2014 to C-suite executives and leaders of Russia’s engineering industry
