News:

Using VR to bring satellite Geospatial Data to life

Quick Facts:

  • Case study showcasing DigitalGlobes collaboration with PSMA to create a digital infrastructure repository of the entire continent of Australia.
  • Visualising the many datasets that DigitalGlobe’s satellites can capture and how that data can be processed to create client worth.
  • VR content modelled, animated and rendered using 3dsmax and Vray for playback in the GearVR headsets

Brief

DigitalGlobe operates a fleet of satellites, continually capturing photographic and geospatial data of our planet in unprecedented detail. DigitalGlobe needed an engaging way to explain how this data can be used and the benefits it brings to the lives of the people and businesses who use it.

Solution

Inition worked with DigitalGlobe to develop an immersive Virtual Reality experience which took the viewer on a journey from Earth’s orbit to the suburbs of Australia. Along the way we explained the types of information DigitalGlobe can extract from their imagery. Features like building heights, roof types, vegetation coverage, swimming pools and solar panels. These are used by customers like PSMA to help with urban infrastructure planning on a scale and accuracy not possible before.

We created a GearVR app to host the 3D VR case study film, providing DigitalGlove with a simple to use, high quality, VR experience.

Result

The Experience was released on April 10th at Engage, an event designed for senior level execs from government and private organisations leveraging location information to enable smarter decisions.
