Stereoscopic 3D visualisation of proposed site redevelopment for Amersham PLC.

For many people change can be an unsettling experience. Amersham PLC, world leaders in healthcare and life sciences, were mindful of this when they wanted to redevelop their labs at Little Chalfont, Bucks, UK, removing a dozen old 70's style office and temporary structures and replacing them with a modern campus-style development.

Amersham PLC knew they had to convince the local residents and the planning authority that the proposed development was in keeping with the local area, would improve the aesthetics of the site and did not intrude near neighbours. We were approached and asked to come up with an innovative and exciting 3D stereoscopic animation of the new designs that would capture the imagination of the planners and local residents.

The work involved close collaboration with Widdup Amer architects who had drawn up the original plans. Using cutting edge technology we were able to animate the new designs growing out of the old site, showing the phases of development, the views of the site from the perspective of a visitor and most importantly that of the local residents.

We used 3D stereoscopic rear projection to show a 20-minute computer animation of how the site would be improved by the new development. By wearing simple polarising glasses the audience, comprising local residents and members of the local planning authority, was able to see the new designs leap off the screen adding a tremendous sense of depth and realism to the images.

Our 3D stereoscopic model was an unqualified success. Any fears that the local residents and town planners may have had about the proposed redevelopment quickly evaporated and our clients Amersham PLC were successful in gaining planning permission for phase 1 of their proposals.
