Inition StereoBrain 3D Processor

The StereoBrain Processor is a 3D HD video processing unit developed for use in stereoscopic 3D production and broadcast. This new product from Inition and NuMedia Technology provides a range of broadcast quality video processing units capable of handling many of the essential functions required when shooting stereoscopic 3D.

StereoBrain Processor

The SB-1 model is designed to allow live viewing of a stereoscopic camera pair or other genlocked 3D video source on any of the current breed of 3D televisions (e.g. Hyundai, Samsung, JVC). This enables live 3D monitoring or 3D viewing in post-production environments from any 3D pair of HD-SDI sources. The SB-1 outputs the pair of images via a single DVI/HDMI signal in interlaced or side-by-side configuration, both of which are common 3D formats. It can also output anaglyph and overlayed left/right on a standard 2D HD monitor. Both side-by-side and mirror/beam-splitter rigs are also supported with the latter via a built in a vertical flip function.

The StereoBrain Processor (SB-1) is the first in a range of 3D processors being developed jointly by broadcast video experts NuMedia Technology and stereoscopic 3D specialists Inition with consultancy from Peter Wilson. Seven of the units were used during the live broadcast of Keane from Abbey Road Studios (3 for mirror flipping one channel from the 3 mirror rigs, two for live and preview monitoring on 3D TVs and one for mobile monitoring on the camera floor).

StereoBrain Processor Applications

1. Single 3D camera - Anaglyph (red/cyan) or 50/50 overlay from side-by-side rig (eg PoleCam 3D head) on standard operator's 2D HD-SDI monitor. Each of the two HD-SDI outputs may be configured differently (e.g. one to anaglyph, one to overlayed). 2. Single 3D camera - anaglyph or overlay from mirror rig (eg P+S Technik) on standard 2D monitor. StereoBrain flips image from top camera.
3. Single 3D camera - live monitoring on 3D TV and simultaneously with 3D view on 2D HD-SDI monitor if required. From either stereoscopic camera rigs (side-by-side or mirror), a vision mixer or dual spigot workstation (eg Quantel, Avid, etc). 4. Multi-camera vision mixed. StereoBrain flips image from top camera on mirror rig, outputs separate left/right HD-SDI and keeps both signals in sync by delaying image from bottom camera by same amount as top. One StereoBrain per mirror rig.

Inputs: 2 x HD-SDI (sources must be genlocked - please note that we believe this is not the case with Red One camera's monitoring outputs, even when the cameras themselves are genlocked. This means currently a timebase corrector  such as the Aja Gen10 must be used. This may not be the case with future versions of the StereoBrain which may accept non genlocked inputs).

Outputs: 2 x HD-SDI, 1 x DVI/HDMI (all three outputs (DVI, HD-SDI-1 and HD-SDI-2) can be configured independently so for example you could set the DVI to interlace, HD-SDI-1 to anaglpyh and HD-SDI-2 to difference mode. These ouput settings are configured via a browser interface, usually via   laptop. The unit remembers them if it is switched off and on).

Signal Formats Processed: 720p50, 720p59.94, 720p60, 1080psF23, 1080psF24, 1080psF25, 1080i50, 1080i59.94, 1080i60

Functionality:

Inputs may be flipped independently for when shooting with a mirror/beam-splitter rig.
Configuration panel accessed via web interface and network socket compatible with all major web browsers.
Use standard 2D monitors for monitoring 3D camera sources using either anaglyph or 50/50 overlayed image.

Power: Connector: locking 2.1mm jack. Power: 10W Max, external 12V PSU

Inition at IBC
17 July 2009
This year at IBC we will be exhibiting with broadcast technology specialist Numedia on stand 4.B75 (Hall 4). The stand will provide a live demo of the StereoBrain (SB-1) complete with live 3D camera systems including a 3D Polecam, mirror based rigs and 3D TVs from JVC and Hyundai.

We will also be screening recent 3D production footage from projects such as Keane’s 3D performance at Abbey Road Studios, Royal Mail's 3D commercial, and the PSG Ligue Un match for Orange, screened live to an audience in Paris earlier this year. The exhibition takes place from the 11th to the 15th September 2009, at the RAI Centre, Amsterdam.

Don Giovanni Opera
02 June 2009
Inition and Can Communicate worked with Orange Labs to simulcast the first ever live opera performance in 3D. The performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni took place at Rennes Opera House in Brittany last month and was viewed by a combination of paying and VIP audiences at cinemas in Paris, Avignon and Brest.

The performance was captured from four camera positions using Inition’s StereoBrain Processor to facilitate live monitoring on 3D TVs. Audiences from across five separate cinemas watched through 3D glasses to experience the opera in astounding quality as if they were viewing live in the Rennes Opera House.

Inition Co-Produce Keane's Historic Live 3D Musical Performance
08 April 2009
Inition last week applied their expertise to the production of the UK's first successful broadcast of a live event in 3D TV to a domestic 3D TV set, via Sky's satellite network and existing Sky+HD set-top boxes. The broadcast was part of a 3D music event co-produced by Inition, Sky, production company Nineteen Fifteen Productions and Island Records to coincide with Keane’s live performance that saw a 3D webcast of the gig via Keane’s website.

The gig took place on Thursday April 2nd 2009, with Keane playing a set from the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London. An anaglyph webcast was shown on Keanemusic.com where fans from around the world watched with 3D glasses. The production was run as a full multi-camera HD shoot.

Inition Launch 3D HD Video Processing Unit ‘StereoBrain’ at BV Expo 2009
10 February 2009
Broadcast Video Expo 2009, Earl's Court, London, 17 February 2009: Today is the unveiling of the StereoBrain Processor (SB-1), a new 3D HD video processing unit developed for use in stereoscopic 3D production and broadcast. The StereoBrain Processor (SB-1) is the first in a range of 3D processors being developed jointly by broadcast video experts NuMedia Technology and stereoscopic 3D specialists Inition.

The SB-1 model is designed to allow live viewing of a stereoscopic camera pair or other 3D video source on any of the current breed of 3D televisions (Hyundai, Samsung, JVC). This enables live 3D monitoring or 3D viewing in post-production environments from any 3D pair of HD-SDI sources.

The SB-1 outputs the pair of images via a single DVI/HDMI signal in interlaced or side-by-side configuration, both of which are common 3D formats. It can also output overlayed left/right on a standard 2D HD monitor. Both side-by-side and mirror/beam-splitter rigs are also supported with the latter via a built in a vertical flip function.

Future models of the StereoBrain Processor (SB-2, SB-3) will launch in Q2, 2009 and will support a range of sophisticated 3D video processing functions including the ability to shift convergence live and additional features to align and monitor stereoscopic 3D sources. The SB-1 is being demonstrated with a live 3D camera system on the NuMedia Technology and Inition stand K36.

Andy Millns, Director at Inition commented: "3D has always been technically challenging from acquisition and post-production through to distribution. Current video hardware was not designed to handle 3D images but ability to to view and manipulate 3D pairs of HD sources is an essential tool for 3D production. The StereoBrain Processor allows you to monitor and manipulate 3D on a wide range of 3D and non-3D monitors and TVs. This represents a significant improvement in the 3D production process."
