A Match Made in 3D

3D Expert backs Inition

Leading autostereoscopic expert, Nick Holliman, endorses Inition after they equip his new research lab.

“I chose Inition because they are reliable, honest and very helpful. I recommend them to other universities, companies and display manufacturers,” says Holliman.

Inition supplied Holliman with a DTI stereoscopic display, an autostereoscopic Sharp laptop and an Intersense IS-900 Mark 2 tracking system - which Inition worked with SGI to integrate with a Silicon Graphics Onyx system.

Holliman is highly regarded in the industry and is based at Durham University’s computer science department. Before his appointment he worked for the games company Codemasters and carried out research for Sharp Laboratories of Europe.

His new Durham eScience Research Laboratory offers many exciting possibilites for 3D research: geologists are scanning the North East coast to predict the rock structure under the North Sea; physicists are creating virtual models of the big bang; chemists are visualising the electric field around atoms; sociologists are modelling real world environments and anthropologists are mapping ancient skulls.

Naturally this kind of research requires a high degree of accuracy. Inition installed the Intersense tracking system with laser sighting survey equipment to ensure precise calibration. The tracking is now accurate to within a millimeter over a 4.5 meter space.

The lab doubles as a teaching centre. Last year students used 3D displays to test software. “We found people perform better in 3D simulations than 2D simulations,” Holliman remarks.

Holliman’s own research interests include 3D computer graphics and visualisation technologies. He specialises in the theory and application of auto-stereoscopic 3D displays.

“The lab is very impressive because of the range of 3D displays supplied by Inition. I hope to continue working with them as it has been a positive experience,” says Holliman.

Notes for editors

Inition have been working with Nick Holliman since February 2003.

Holliman led the software team in the 3D imaging technology group at Sharp's European Research Laboratories for seven years. He worked on 3D image tools for creating, storing and displaying stereo 3D images. In addition he worked on computer vision software for real time head tracking and rectifying stereo photographs for comfortable human viewing. A number of these tools have now been developed for use on the Sharp Actius RD3D PC.

Inition (www.inition.co.uk) was formed in 2001 by Stuart Cupit, James Gant, Chris Sutton and Andy Millns. The team has a passion for 3D graphics and provide a range of virtual reality and stereoscopic solutions, including autosteroscopic screens, bespoke interactive 3D experiences, motion capture, virtual reality hardware integration, 3D object digitizing and 3D project consultancy. Inition have worked with the RSPB, P&G, the NHS and the London Metropolitan Police
