Release 3D laptop Actius RD3D Taking autostereoscopic technology to its next logical progression, Sharp Systems of America have released a notebook PC with an LCD display capable of producing '3D without glasses'.
Dubbed the Actius RD3D and designed with realtime 3D applications in mind, the system incorporates an nVidia GeForce4 graphics card and is to be bundled with three of the latest titles from 3D games giant Electronic Arts. The laptop features the expected range of integrated devices (see pdf for further details), however the bit we're always interested in at Inition, the 3D display, offers 15" of diagonal real estate and a resolution of 1024 x 768. The technology chosen to drive the display is a parallax barrier system which provides different patterns to the each of the user's eyes. This allows the graphics card to deliver images rendered from different viewpoints to each eye, giving the user a effective perception of depth within the full colour scene. This technology does require that the user position's their head in a central position in front of the display, however one of the key features this technology offers is the ability to switch between 2D and 3D allowing the user to work with the notebook in an entirely normal 2D manner. The system ships with a stereo photo editor, and slide show, along with a 3D movie player with a collection of 3D blockbuster movie trailers. However, European 3D enthusiasts will have to bide their time a little as the unit is not yet available within Europe. Please click here to view product specification in pdf format.
