Stereoscopic 3D
A range of displays and production equipment that give a perception of depth within moving images.
Multiview Autostereoscopic Displays
3D displays without the need for the 3D glasses. Very effective as attention grabbing digital signage but also have applications in scientific, oil and gas, and medical imaging. 1
Stereo 3D Screens with Glasses
3D displays that work with 3D glasses. Suited to for small audiences for professional 3D applications. 2
Single view Autostereoscopic Displays
3D displays without the need for 3D glasses but for a single user at a time. 3
Stereo 3D Projection with Glasses
3D projection systems that work with 3D glasses. Ideal for large audiences. 4
Stereo 3D Filming Equipment
Various items of equipment useful in the acquisition stages of 3D film production. 5
Head Mounted Displays
Devices mounted on the wearer's head which display images in front of the eye(s).
Binocular HMDs
Two display panels, one located in front of each of the wearer's eyes. These may be monoscopic (2D) or stereoscopic (3D). 7
Monocular HMDs
Single display panel fixed in front of one eye, typically allowing real-world vision with the other (not the same as monoscopic HMDs which refer to non-stereo binocular HMDs). 8
3D Input Devices
Input devices allowing 3D interaction.
Desktop
Consumer 3D software input devices. 10
Hand-held
Motion tracked 3dof and 6dof (degree of freedom) position and orientation input. 11
Exotic Displays
3D and other large screen displays and software.
Volumetric / Holographic
True 3D displays where the images can be seen from multiple angles in a natural way as though you were looking at real objects. 12
Immersive
Displays that surround you with an image to create an immersed feeling. 13
Motion Capture / Tracking
Devices for capturing human motion and tracking points in space.
Inertial
GyroScope-based 3dof (degree of freedom) sensors detecting orientation motion. 15
Magnetic
Electromagnetic field generator and sensors for 6dof (position, orientation) motion. 16
Optical
Cameras to detect active or passive markers, 3dof native position (triangulate for orientation). 17
Optical Capture Systems
Camera-based systems to detect active or passive markers, 3dof native position (triangulate for orientation). 18
Capture Suits
Flexible and portable single person sensor suits, 3dof and 6dof motion. 19
Ultrasonic and Ultra Wide Band
Acoustic- and radio-based emitter and sensor systems, 3dof native position (triangulate for orientation). 20
Eye Trackers
Camera-based desktop and head mounted eye position detection (sometimes with scene information and line of sight calculations). 21
Motion Capture Software
Third party editing and conversion software. 22
VR Gloves
Gloves that capture finger and hand movement.
VR Gloves
Hand and finger motion detection. 23
Haptic Gloves
Gloves which provide a sensation of touch by applying forces, vibrations and motions to the user's fingers. 24
Software
Third party software. 25
Force Feedback / Haptics
Devices that allow the user to 'touch' 3D data.
Haptic Devices
Devices which provide a sensation of touch by applying forces, vibrations and motions to the user using a system of gimbals and motors. 26
Haptic Gloves
Gloves which provide a sensation of touch by applying forces, vibrations and motions to the user's fingers. 27
Software
Software and programming tools which simulate forces used to drive haptic devices. 28
3D Scanning / Digitizing
Devices that collect 3D data from real-world objects or environments to construct digital 3D models.
3D Optical Digitizers
Patterned light is projected onto subjects; deformation is recorded by an off-set camera. Triangulation calculates a 3D mesh. Fast, accurate and adaptable for human portraiture. 29
3D Laser Scanners
A laser line moves over subjects' surfaces; an off-set camera records deformation. Triangulation calculates a 3D mesh. Slower, but higher accuracy enabled for static objects. 30
3D Mechanical Digitizers
Mechanical arms physically probe objects, guided by the user; points are recorded on the surface of subjects. Intuitive but slow. Unsuitable for delicate objects. 31
3D Scanning software
View, edit and export scan data efficiently and accurately. Triangulation, registration and merging algorithms, polygon editing, CAD conversion, model export for web viewing. 32
3D Printing
Devices producing solid, detailed, and functional prototypes from 3D/CAD modelling data.
3D Printers
Standard and high-res 3D printers producing intricate plastic models from 3D designs. For architecture, product design, jewellery, medical/dental planning, film and video games. 33
Desktop 3D Printers
Affordable, user-friendly 3D printers utilising the simplicity and reliability of 2D plotter technology. Ideal for educational purposes and engineering/industrial design departments. 34
Rapid Prototyping Software
Software for creating and verifying 3D models for Rapid Prototyping processes. Advanced and highly automated tools which prevent failed print jobs due to corrupt data files. 35
Software Tools
A range of 3D toolkits, SDKs and GUI software.
Real-time 3D
Software that draws images on screen fast enough (~60fps) to allow users to interact with the images. Typically used to create immersive worlds for a more engaging experience. 36
